The Delta rocket pictured contained NASA’s Polar Satellite into polar orbit. The satellite is one of a series of satellites put into orbit by NASA for mapping of solar phenomenon and their interaction with the earth’s electromagnetic fields. One of the instrument packages built by Lockheed Missiles and Space, consisted of a series of Chip on Board microelectronic assemblies. The assemblies were protected by a NASA approved Ionic Systems silicon nitride coating applied after the instrument packages were fully assembled.
A total of twelve flight hardware assemblies were coated with five spares. All assemblies functioned normally after processing and were successfully launched into orbit. The Delta successfully launched Polar into orbit thirty six hours after this photo was taken.
